MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Director-General Oscar Albayalde discussed the ongoing recalibration of President Duterte administration's controversial war on drugs in a television interview on The Source aired by CNN Philippines on August 22, 2018.
During the appearance, he described that the campaign got anti-illegal drugs will continue to be "relentless" yet will implement strategies which aims to reduce bloodshed. The recalibrated approach signals a shift in operational priorities which will focus on but not limited to high-value targets rather than widespread street-level arrests.
Albayalde added that they will concentrate on the drug list of high-value targets and further suggested a more intelligence-driven and selective enforcement strategy moving forward.
The episode also touched broader concerns in the national security including allegations of a supposed plot by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to assassinate President Rodrigo Duterte which had stirred public speculation and diplomatic concern.
